Bottom Fish < back
There are so many species of bottom dwelling fish off our coast, it would be impossible to list them all here. They are generically referred to as Rock Cod. Bottom fish are usually targeted during the winter months and for table fare. They are considered some of the best eating fish in the sea. These fish are found in deep waters usually over 100 feet to as deep as 300 or 400 feet. Large capacity reels, stiff boat rods and heavy weights are required to reach them. When catching fish in waters as deep as this, their bladders tend to inflate and their eyes will extend as the pressure around them decreases. When this happens, the fish will simply float to the surface and releases are seldom successful unless done with extreme care and proper handling. Don't expect the tremendous fight common with our pelagic fish. If however your goal is a cooler full of fish for the table, bottom fishing is for you. Many anglers are dedicated bottom fishermen and prefer it to most other kinds of fishing. |
