Bangalore: Take a handful of mentors and startups, and you will get lots of ideas, but add a few wild college students, a boat on the sea for four months at a stretch and you will get ‘Unreasonable at Sea’! -A voyage that holds its course but changes the lives of the people who are a part of it.
On January 9, 2013, the first experimental Unreasonable at Sea accelerator class will leave San Diego aboard Semester at Sea‘s MV Explorer (the fastest cruise-liner in the world) for a 14 country jaunt to test, deploy and scale 10 startups in international markets. Unreasonable at Sea’s route will span 106 days, 16 cities, 12 countries and 24,000 nautical miles.
The young entrepreneurs will have a chance to spend their days at sea along with prominent entrepreneurs and be given an opportunity to meet mentors like Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress, Archbishop Desmond Tutu - Nobel peace laureate and Kamran Elahian who has co-founded more than half-a-dozen highly successful companies, including CAE systems, Cirrus Logic Inc., NeoMagic Corporation and Centillium Communications.
The inaugural program, which is a joint venture between the Unreasonable Institute and Stanford’s d.school, will set sail from Ensenada, Mexico on Jan. 9. The 11 startups, comprised of 26 entrepreneurs, along with 627 Semester at Sea college students will visit Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Burma, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana and Morocco. The voyage will end in Spain on April 25, when the voyage will have accounted for 100 days of learning from the sharpest minds in the world.
Of the 11 startups, entrepreneurs from 2 Indian enterprises remain a part of the voyage. These two individuals belonging to two successful startups are revolutionaries in their field: simple and basic tool that everyone can use.
